Dept denies another quake to hit Sabah soon

KOTA KINABALU: The Meteorological Department has dismissed claims that another earthquake would strike Sabah soon.

In a statement yesterday, the department said it had never issued any warning that a 5.9 to 7 magnitude earthquake would occur in Sabah between 9 pm and midnight.

The public can also contact the MetMalaysia hotline at 1300 22 1MET (1638) or National Earthquake and Tsunami Centre at 03 79678065.

Meanwhile a weak earthquake, measuring 2.5 on the Richter scale, was detected yesterday in Ranau, according to the Meteorological Department.

The epicentre of the quake, which struck at 11.15 am, was five kilometres to the north of Ranau, it said in a statement.

On June 5, a 5.9-magnitude earthquake rocked Ranau, claiming 18 lives.
