Sarawak end 7-year wait for table tennis title

KUCHING: After a lapse of seven years, Sarawak have recaptured the overall championship title at the 35th Milo Malaysia Junior and Cadet Table Tennis Championship at Keat Hwa Middle School in Alor Setar, Kedah.

The 20-member team led by Chung Kui Chai won six gold, five silver and three bronze medals to collect 65 points and top the meet from June 10-13.

Although favourites Selangor also won six golds, they lost out to Sarawak on points as they only had two bronzes to show.

In a distant third on 18 points were Kuala Lumpur who won one silver and six bronzes.

Alice Chang Li Sian from Kuching was the team’s best performer as she won golds in the Girls U15 singles, Girls U15 doubles and Girls U15 team.

She was ranked number one in the Girls U15 in this competition.

Gabriel Ling Kerk Yu also impressed with one gold in the Boys U15 singles, one bronze in Boys U15 doubles and one silver in the Boys U15 team to be ranked number one in the category.

Sarawak’s two other golds came from the Girls U18 team event and Girls U18 doubles while the silver medals were won in the Girls U18 singles, Boys U18 singles, Girls U15 doubles, Boys U15 doubles and Boys U18 team.

Other Sarawak paddlers in the top 10 ranking for the championship included Girls U15 Karen Lynn Dick (No. 3), Tay Lynn Jia (No. 6), Boys U15 Christopher Goh Kho Hian Hock (No. 8), Louis Chung Kian Fu (No. 10), Girls U18 Foo Wui Ying (No. 2), Catherine Chan Zhe Yen (No. 4), Elicia Tsai Xin Ni (No. 8), Angel Chan Low Yung (No. 9), Boys U18 Jason Siaw Ting Shen (No. 2) and Calvin Chieng Chun (No. 7).

The coaches headed by Thomas Tay Choon Chai included Ling Tiing Sik, Ang Guat Kee, Kho Mao Sheng and Chua Kian Peng.
