MIRI: Some Tudan Phase 5 residents are said to be unhappy that a concrete bridge in their neighbourhood would be officiated at on June 29 by someone not from the Majulah Miri camp.

Resident Alias Julaihi, in his late 60s, said yesterday that Majulah Miri was the one that got the Public Works Deparment (PWD) to build a Bailey bridge in the last election as a temporary measure.

“At that time, Majulah Miri also applied for the construction of a concrete bridge.

“Hence, I am surprised to hear that a politician who is not from Majulah Miri would be declaring open the bridge at the end of this month,” he said.

Alias claimed his neighbours were all thankful to Majulah Miri, especially its founder Datuk Hii King Chiong, for realising their dream (of having a concrete bridge) of 15 years.

He added it was Hii who applied for the Bailey and concrete bridges, which links Tudan Phase 1, 3, 5 to Permyjaya, Desa Pujut and Permymall Mall.

Alias said this kind of politicking was unhealthy.

Resident Libak Ahmad was unhappy, too.

“What is happening is like that Malay proverb ‘Sapi punya susu, kerbau dapat nama’,” said Libak.

Meanwhile, Hii, who went to take a look at the bridge yesterday, confirmed that he had applied for the concrete bridge, and it was approved last year.

He was shocked that ‘someone’ else would be declari ng it open on June 29.

Accompanying Hii were political secretary to the Chief Minister, Suzanne Lee and UPP Pujut chairman Bruce Chai.
