MIRI: Traditional ‘kuih’ makers selling at the Ramadan bazaar at Saberkas Commercial Centre here have been reminded not to use staples on their product packaging for safety reasons.

Hawkers Association of Pasar Malam chairman Abdul Rahman Jawawi said Miri Health Department had given a briefing on this matter before the Muslim fasting month started.

“Using staples pose a danger to consumers, especially children,” he told The Borneo Post yesterday.

Abdul Rahman said most hawkers at the bazaar were using wooden skewers in packaging traditional delights such as ‘kuih bongkol’, ‘celorot’, ‘pulut panggang’ and ‘tapai’.

He acknowledged that the use of the readily available staples was a trend among hawkers.

“Not all hawkers use staples, however.”

Meanwhile, on visits to a few Ramadan bazaars here yesterday, some hawkers did not bother to display price tags for their goods despite a directive from the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Consumerism and Cooperatives.

In total, there are about 500 Ramadan bazaar stalls in the city this year, the majority of them are at Saberkas, Indoor Stadium carpark, Morsjaya and Lutong MyMall.
