KUCHING: Sarawak Forestry Corporation (SFC) will be hosting the inaugural National Hornbill Conference from Aug 11-13 this year in Miri.

The conference will be a build up to the 7th International Hornbill Conference to be hosted by Sarawak in 2017. Organised by SFC in partnership with a number of international and local partners, the conference will provide a platform for those working on hornbills to present and share their studies, information and conservation techniques.

The National Hornbill Conference will provide a platform for participants from Sarawak, Sabah, Peninsular Malaysia, brunei and other neighbouring states who may want to contribute their research findings in this forum.

Under the theme ‘Hornbill Survival in Fragmented Landscape’, the conference sessions are further divided into four sub-themes:

– Conservation status of hornbills – threats, trade, population
– Hornbill biology and husbandry
– Habitat fragmentation and connectivity
– Importance of hornbills – ecosystem, culture, tourism and awareness

The keynote speaker for the conference is Prof Emeritus Dr Pillai Poonswad from the Hornbill Research Foundation Faculty of Science Mahidol University Bangkok, Thailand.

Dr Pillai is also the winner for the 2006 Rolex Awards for Enterprise and 2006 Chevron Conservation Awards.
