Filipina fined for possessing pirated DVDs

KOTA KINABALU: A Filipina was fined RM8,500, in default, 11 months’ jail by a Magistrate’s Court here for possessing 1,320 pirated DVDs for the purpose of selling them.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus imposed the fine on Jernalyn Sahid, 28, after she pleaded guilty as charged under Section 18 (4)(A) of the Film Censorship Act 2002, and punishable under Section 18 (15) of the same Act, yesterday.

The indictment carries a fine of up to RM30,000 or a jail term of up to three years or both, upon conviction.

Jernalyn was found selling the items without the ‘B’ certificate at a premises of a shopping complex at Jalan Sulaman here on June 21.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Lim Swee Beng told the court that the accused was arrested during an operation at the shopping complex after finding that the accused was selling the items without the certificate.

The court also ordered the accused to be referred to the Immigration Department for further action.

In a separate case, a man was sentenced to five months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here for house-breaking.

Abdul Kid @ Sigal admitted before magistrate Mohd Faiz Omar to breaking into the kitchen of a house in Likas on June 11.

The offence, framed under Section 448 of the Penal Code, is punishable with a jail term of up to three years or a maximum fine of RM5,000, or both, upon conviction.

The court also ordered for the accused to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his jail sentence.
