KUCHING: Liu Jan Kwang, a sports reporter with Chinese newspaper United Daily News, has passed away due to liver cancer.

Assistant Sports Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin said that Liu’s untimely death was a great loss to the state.

Liu was 43 years old when he passed away at 2.30am on Monday. He leaves behind his wife.

“The Chinese media has lost an outstanding sports reporter and I am greatly saddened with the loss,” said Lee who took time off his busy schedule on Monday afternoon to pay his last respects to Liu at the Hung Nam Siang Tng here.

“I have known Liu since he worked in Miri many years back until he moved to Kuching and he often attended my functions especially sports functions.

“I really admire his work attitude and he always make professional reports especially during Sukma where he will follow the Sarawak Contingent to do day-to-day reports on the performance of our athletes,” said Lee who is also Assistant Minister of Communication.

“We have lost a good calibre sports reporter and all these years he has done professional and comprehensive coverage of sports events and they are of high quality,” added Lee.

Apart from Lee, many politicians, leaders in the Chinese community and education, media friends and Kuching Port
Authority staff paid their last respects to Liu and offered condolences to his wife and family members.

Liu will be buried at the Hakka cemetery at Mile 14, Jalan Penrissen today.
