KUCHING: The Stadium Negeri was not packed for a Super League match last week. But that did not stop fans from giving the police personnel on duty a long torrid night. This was according to Kuching police chief ACP Roslan Bek Ahmad.

He was speaking to reporters during an event organised by the Sarawak Press Photographers Association at a mosque at Jalan Simpang Tiga yesterday.

He pointed out that the Police, Rela and JPAM are out in force for all Super League matches in Kuching.

But he described Stadium Negeri as a nightmarish warzone for security personnel stationed there.

Yesterday, the top cop decided to use the opportunity to warn local football fans not to turn Super League match days into occasions to spark riots and chaos.

“I recalled that match days used to be occasions which the policemen looked forward to.

“Nowadays they dreaded them and looked de-motivated every time they are assigned to go the stadium,” he revealed.

Roslan also reminded fans not to bring banned items such as flares and firecrackers into the stadium as these could only endanger the safety of other specators.

“From time to time, we did inform the public about the restriction of bringing items such as firecrackers and flares into venues such as the stadium. Sadly we still have such items been burned by irresponsible fans,” he lamented.

“Just last week we caught an offender burning a flare at the stadium. He was charged on Tuesday,” he warned.

He appealed to all fans to turn football matches into occasions for everyone to get together and have fun.
