Man gets jail, fine for uttering abusive word at cops

KOTA KINABALU: A man was jailed for 30 days and fined RM300, in default, one month in jail for verbally abusing police officers.

Daljit Singh, 60, who was brought before magistrate Mohd Faiz Omar, pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 90 of the Police Act 1967, which carries a maximum fine of RM500, or a jail term of up to six months, or both, upon conviction.

In mitigation, Daljit, who is a security guard, has a sick wife and two children who are still studying.

Daljit uttered harsh words such as “Cibai” and “Polis ambil duit dan tidak buat kerja dan pundek” at a police counter at Alamesra here on June 21.

The facts of the case stated that the accused, who was under the influence of alcohol, approached the police personnel as he wanted to lodge a police report on a theft incident.

The accused scolded the police officers, who were on duty, by uttering abusive words.

In a separate case, the same court fined a government worker RM1,000, in default, two months in jail for causing hurt to his ex-wife.

The magistrate imposed the fine on Azri Azmin, 33, after the latter pleaded guilty to a charge under Section 323 of the Penal Code which provides for a jail term of up to one year, or a maximum fine of RM2,000, or both, upon conviction.

In asking for leniency, Azri told the court that he has children who are depending on him and currently he has loan to settle, upon building his house.

He also said that he was angry at the victim because the latter had requested for a divorce after their house was built.

The accused had voluntarily caused hurt to his ex-wife in a restaurant at the water front here on January 23.

Prosecuting officer Jakariya Jupakkal told the court that the accused had hit the victim from behind, while the victim was eating with a male friend.

The victim’s friend then took the victim to a parking lot. The victim, who was hurt in her left cheek, then lodged a police report.

Jakariya said that investigations revealed that the accused and the victim had been divorced since December, 2014.
