Beef shortage in South Kalimantan

BANJARBARU, South Kalimantan: Head of South Kalimantan Animal Husbandry Agency Sabrie Madani said, this area is still in short supply of beef to the needs during the month of Ramadhan until Idul Fitri 1436 Hijri, Antaranews reported.

“Supplies of beef in June and July during Ramadan to Eid is increasing, while existing stock is still lacking,” he said in Banjarbaru on Thursday.

He said the shortage of meat reached 150 tons in June. Estimated needs is 559 tons, while the stock is only around 410 tonnes. Then in July to Eid meat demand is expected to rise to 847 tonnes, while supply is estimated to be around 410 tonnes.

“The lack of stock, which reached hundreds of tons of it covered by the arrival of the cows from outside the island that has been ordered by merchants. So we are sure the needs are met,” said Sabrie Madani.

The supply of cattle from outside the island are from Bali, NTB and East Java to meet the needs during Ramadan to Eid.

“Cutting cow on a normal day in a month 2,400 head to 3,000 head, while in June it increased 10 percent to 3,200 head and 4,000 head in July,” he said.

He said, stock shortages because beef traders in South Kalimantan also serve the needs of the neighboring province of Central Kalimantan and East Kalimantan.
