KUCHING: After helping Sarawak retain the overall championship trophy at the Mr Malaysia Bodybuilding Championships in Labuan recently, Awang Mohd Azizul Ghani is poised to reap more success in international competitions.

The Kuching-born bodybuilder was crowned the ‘Champion of Champions” at the national meet held from June 5-7.

“I am still waiting for confirmation from the Malaysian Bodybuilding Federation to represent the country. Normally, the winner of the ‘Champion of Champions’ secures an automatic ticket in the national team,” he said.

“My dream all this while to represent Malaysia has come true.”

If selected, the Pheonix Gym-sponsored bodybuilder will compete in three international championships, namely the Mr Olympia in Hong Kong, China in August, Mr Asia in Tashkent (Uzbekistan) in September and Mr Universe in Bangkok in November.

Apart from that, Azizul will also compete at the Johor Invitational in Johor Bahru from Sept 18-21, Mr Little India in Kuala Lumpur on Oct 11 and Be Fit Battle of the Fit also in KL from Nov 14-15.

“Of course I am very happy and excited because this will be the first time I will be representing the country,” said Azizul who thanked his wife Zurina Hipni and mentor Dr Malvern Abdullah as well as fellow bodybuilders for their support and guidance.

According to the 29-year-old, he would not be where he is today without the strong support from the state government and the Sarawak Bodybuilding Association.

Azizul also hopes to follow in the footsteps of national bodybuilder Sazali Samad in achieving international sucess and recognition by training harder in preparation for the coming international competitions.
