SARIKEI: Attitude and lifestyle play a role in preventing fire out-break, says Sarikei District Officer Khalid Andong.

He said this during a leader-meet-the- people gathering, organised by the fire station here and Special Affairs Department (Jasa) at Rumah Richard Ujang in Sungai Rusa yesterday.

Khalid, who represented Minister of Social Development Tan Sri William Mawan to officiate at the closing ceremony of the campaign, said smoking, a bad lifestyle, could cause fire out-break.

“We ought to kick this bad habit as there is nothing good that smoking can bring us. In fact, smoking is a health hazard not only to the smokers but also to non smokers around them,” he said.

He also blamed carelessness as a contributing factor to fire out-break, and advised the people to make it a point to ensure their appliances at home such as gas cookers and other electrical appliances were in good order at all times.

Over 100 people comprising headmen and representatives from 57 longhouses in the surrounding areas attended the gathering.

Tuai Rumah Richard Ujang thanked Bomba and Jasa for organising the meaningful programme.

District fire chief, Suna Kaha, who presented a talk on fire prevention deliberated on the common causes of different categories of fire and later distributed 174 fire extinguishers to representatives of longhouses participating in the campaign.

Julau parliamentary liaison officer Sylvester Embuas, SAO Henry Gimong representing Sarikei Resident and Pemanca Edward Laden were among those present at the gathering.
