KUCHING: For 30 ladies, the chance to get up close and personal with professional makeup artist to the stars, Gebriel Padan, proved to be an exciting experience.

The one-day Makeup Update Programme held recently at Harbour View Hotel here featured a workshop on the correct makeup application techniques targeted at working women and young ladies.

“In today’s workshop, we go back to the basics. Most ladies nowadays still question on the functions of makeup kits, correct methods of application and techniques, as well as choices of colours,” he said when met after the event.

Padan demonstrated proper makeup application techniques for day and evening makeup.

He also gave plenty of makeup tips such as steps to be taken before and after makeup is applied.

“The purpose of makeup is only to enhance the beauty that’s always been there. True beauty starts with beautiful skin, thus it is important for you to take good care of it.

“Some of the basic things that help to take care of your skin include toner, moisturiser, serum, mask, and face wash, but bear in mind it has to suit your own skin too.

“For makeup, basic things include foundation, compact powder, coloured eye shadows, eyeliner, false eyelashes, blusher, lipstick and various types of brushes for shading and contouring,” he explained.

Padan also advised young ladies who are still new at applying makeup to start with products
such as Revlon, Maybelline, Silkygirl and several Korean products available in the market.

“For those who can afford it, they can go for M.A.C,” he added.

Famed for his elegant makeup, Padan has almost a decade of experience under his belt as a professional make-up artist.

“I worked with Nurul Shukor Touch Makeup Artist in Kuala Lumpur before I started working behind the scenes at a local TV production company. Upon my return to Kuching, I worked with M.A.C and Etude House in Kuching before I moved on to become a freelance makeup artist,” he explained.

Besides Miss World Talent 2014 Dewi Liana Seriestha, his other clients include several local artistes such as Iban songbird Melissa Francis, Erra Fazira, Leez Zwita, Rannee Pat and Lucy M.

The workshop proved to be a ‘fun and really interesting experience’ for Minda Ngindang who won the Best Makeup title at the workshop.

“This really means a lot to me as I have learned lots of things on proper makeup. This is my first time attending a makeup workshop and I feel really happy,” said the kindergarten teacher.

Also a first-timer, Catherine Sambai received the Best Student award and the workshop proved to be something unexpected for her.

“It was really fun. Initially I thought it’s going to be a cold and boring workshop, but Gebriel proved me wrong. With him teaching us here, I felt overjoyed. He has amazing skills in teaching too, apart from his excellent works on makeup. At least now I know what is right and what is wrong on makeup from his workshop today,” she said.

Meanwhile, for Nurul Syakina Awang, a 21-year-old student from Sabah, the workshop was such a pleasure.

“I felt delighted as I got the taste of it now. Usually, I will just ask my friends to help me with my makeup, but now as I have learned the basics, I can just do it on my own,” she added.

The participants at the workshop received door gifts sponsored by Superwhite.
