KUCHING: Despite not being able to climb Mount Kinabalu as planned, 33 members of the 1st Kuching Boys’ Brigade, 1st Kuching Girls’ Brigade and Stedfast Association made the most of their recent trip to Sabah by lending a helping hand to locals who were affected by the June 5 earthquake and the mud flood that followed.

According to the group’s spokesperson Robert Wee, the group from Kuching decided to hold a charity drive in Ranau where they approached Ayam Brand and managed to raise RM3,500 worth of food to be distributed to 70 families.

“After getting assurance from Sabah Tourism Board director Datuk Irene Charuruks that Kundasang is safe to visit,
the group members, some of whom flew all the way from Australia, New Zealand and the United States for the trip, resolved to carry on with their planned trip while also organising a charity drive to help the locals here,” he said in a statement.

He hoped the contribution would be able to alleviate the burden of the people who were affected by the recent calamity, especially during the month of Ramadan.

During the trip, the group also visited islands off Kota Kinabalu before returning to Kuching on Sunday.
