THE government aims to add elements of early prevention against militant threats in the new National Service Training Program (PLKN) module – PLKN 2.0, the Dewan Negara was told yesterday.

Defence Minister Datuk Seri Hishammuddin Tun Hussein said the addition of new elements in the module was important, as it prepared trainees to face new threats, such as the so-called Islamic State (IS) militants.

However, he said that the matter was still under review, as the use of the social media by the IS was a huge challenge to overcome.

“I, along with members of international security and intelligence agencies are still researching and exploring the IS phenomenon, and as of now, there has been no formula to address it.

“Transmission through social media brings dire consequences, whereby it crosses borders and influences youths, and it is not only stifling us, but also countries that are far more advanced than us,” he said. Accordingly, Hishammuddin said the government was working hard to study the pull factors which influenced young people, and measures to prevent them from being involved in militancy.

Among the additions that would be included in the new module was to instill values of world peace, in the context of the current situation in the world, he said. In the meantime, he said elements of technical and vocational skills which would also be included in the new PLKN module, would be an added value to the trainees when looking for job opportunities. — Bernama
