MBJB to use ‘Spy Sunglasses Cameras’ to nab littering offenders

JOHOR BAHARU: Spy glasses that can record video is the latest type of gadget acquired by the Johor Baharu City Council (MBJB) in order to prevent littering around the city.

Mayor Datuk Abdul Rahman Mohamed Dewam said the device will be used by a newly established Litter Prevention Unit (UPK) that will apprehend those throwing litter in public spots beginning July 1.

“UPK personnel will use the high-defintion Spy Sunglasses Camera to record audio visuals of the offences, and it can record for up to 8 hours. So far, we have six such devices to begin with,” he told reporters after launching the new unit at the MBJB building here, yesterday.

Abdul Rahman said those who were caught would then be taken to a mobile counter to watch the recorded video of their offence before being told to settle the compound. Besides that, the unit consisting of six enforcement personnel would be wearing plainclothes to remain undercover during the operation.

“Among the public places which will be the main target as Anti-Litter Enforcement Zones include the walkway at City Square, JB Bazar and Bazar Karat areas, JB Sentral and Larkin Sentral,” he said. He said students or the general public who were caught and found guilty of littering would be fined immediately on-site, with RM20 for students, and RM50 for adults and tourists.

“Offenders who fail to pay the compound will be subject to court action, while school and higher education students will be required to attend the Anti-Litter Generation awareness programme,” he said.

Accordingly, MBJB will distribute a notice of the implementation of the anti-litter operations at government offices, schools, universities, shopping malls and business premises of the building.

“We hope this new unit and equipment can help curb the indiscriminate acts of littering everywhere, and at the same time produce a more advanced community which makes cleanliness a way of life,” said Abdul Rahman. — Bernama
