KUCHING: There should be no political interference with the ongoing restructuring of Malaysia Airlines (MAS).

With new chief executive officer Christoph Mueller on board to oversee the massive revamp of the ailing airline, the secretary of Malaysian Trades Union Congress (MTUC) Sarawak division, Andrew Lo, said politicians should stay out of the new business transformation plans.

“Political interference is one of the biggest issues in Malaysia’s corporate sector and this has contributed to the problems in MAS.

“We want to see an airline that is successful, safe, has good service, and serves our national objective. With political interference out of the way and Mueller running the airline, I am confident we can see MAS becoming successful for the benefit of all Malaysians,” he told a press conference at MTUC Sarawak office here yesterday.

On the issue regarding National Union of Flight Attendants Malaysia (Nufam) threatening to strike, Lo said it was very irresponsible and self-centred for the union to do so.

“Unions are about finding solutions and I think they are not finding any solutions.

“In terms of the efforts put in by the leaders of unions in Sarawak, I am confident that with their commitment and promise in making sure their members’ welfare are looked after, I’m confident we can move forward in this new exercise,” he said.

MTUC Sarawak president Mohd Ibrahim Hamid, Airlines Workers Union Sarawak (AWUS) president Haswandy Morshidi, AWUS secretary Lim Swee Seng, Sarawak Executive Staff Committee (SESC) president Abdul Rahman Hassan, SESC secretary Aziz Ali, and Airlines Transport Workers Union Sabah president Awang Musa Awang Kassim were also present at the press conference.
