KOTA BAHARU: An offer of a RM100 bribe to a policeman has landed a 43-year-old boatman in jail for two weeks and a fine of RM10,000, in default one-month jail.

Boatman Zakaria Abd Rahman will have to serve the jail term from June 27, the day he was arrested, said Sessions Court Judge Adli Abd Ghalib. Zakaria had pleaded guilty to giving the bribe to a policeman at Pengakalan Azizah, Rantau Panjang, in Pasir Mas on June 27 as an inducement to release a Myanmar national who did not have valid travel documents.

He appealed to the judge to impose a mild sentence on the grounds that he had school-going children and had to take care of his aged mother.

Deputy Public Prosecutor Shahidah Muslimah Roslan appeared for the prosecution while Zakaria was not represented by counsel. — Bernama
