Elderly man jailed for attempted theft

KOTA KINABALU: An elderly man was sent to jail for one month by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday for attempted theft of belongings inside a car.

Magistrate Cindy Mc Juce Balitus imposed the sentence on Foo Tham Ming, 56, after he admitted to attempting to steal from a car at a car park in Penampang on May 21.

The accused, represented by counsel Hamid Ismail, was convicted under Section 379 of the Penal Code, read together with Section 511 of the same Code, which carries a maximum jail sentence of three and a half years and also liable to a fine, upon conviction.

Prosecuting officer Inspector Isfandiar Dr Jasdi told the court that the accused was caught while rummaging inside the car belonging to a 46-year-old victim.

The accused was in the midst of ransacking the victim’s sling bag which was placed in the back seat of the car when he was caught by the victim who then brought him to the Penampang police station for further investigation.
