KOTA KINABALU: Institut Sinaran will be having its annual World Environment Day with a new activity in store for its participants, Eco – Challenge 2015 at the campus itself.

With this year’s World Environment Day theme, “Seven Billion Dreams. One Planet. Consume with Care”, Institut Sinaran will set out to raise awareness about the growing environmental issues impacting Sabah among students, in the form of team activities and scavenger hunt.

The Eco-Challenge Contest consists of exciting challenges of games, scavenger hunt, quizzes and intriguing puzzles based on the awareness of environmental issues in hopes to promote students’ participation in efforts to preserve the environment and to encourage creativity and team building among the young generation today.

The contest is open to all upper secondary school students in Kota Kinabalu and also the surrounding region. Each participating team must consist of 10 to 12 members and the team with the highest accumulated score wins.

The rewarding of scores for each challenge will be based on speed, accuracy, completeness and creativity of answers.

A big crowd is expected this year. So far, Institut Sinaran has received multiple teams from Maktab Nasional, SMK Datuk Peter Mojuntin, Kian Kok Middle School, SMK Bahang, Maktab Sabah, Sekolah Menengah Shan Tao and Sabah Tshung Tsin Secondary School. Institut Sinaran is expecting more schools to join in this event.

The contest itself will be held in Institut Sinaran on July 25 from 8am to 1pm. Students will be required to be at the venue by 7am for registration. Winners will be announced during the closing ceremony on the day itself.

Besides the Eco-Challenge Contest, the IS World Environment Day Video Contest and “YB Minister! We have something to tell you” are also activities that aim to mutually raise awareness but in a different approach.

Institut Sinaran was established in 1987 as Sabah Tshung Tsin Pre-University centre to provide affordable, internationally recognized Pre-U qualification locally.

It was upgraded to an institute on July 14, 2002 and is presently the biggest Cambridge GCE A-Level Centre in East Malaysia.
