KOTA KINABALU: A Filipino, holding a fake Malaysian identity card (MyKad) which he claimed was obtained from a man in Semporna, was sentenced to 18 months’ jail by the Magistrate’s Court here yesterday.

Magistrate Stephanie Sherron Abbie meted the sentence on Mohd Khais Abdul Rahman, 31, after he pleaded guilty as charged under Rule 25 (1) (e) of the National Registration Regulations (NRD), which provides for a maximum jail of three years and a fine of up to RM20,000, upon conviction.

The unrepresented accused was arrested in front of a shopping complex here on May 6 for having a MyKad bearing the numbers 810316-12-5355 under his name.

The magistrate also ordered for the accused to be referred to the Immigration Department after serving his jail term for further action.

Prosecuting officer, Inspector Lim Swee Beng, told the court that the complainant, who was on duty at that time had arrested and conducted a check on the accused after suspecting that the accused was in possession of a fake MyKad. Following a preliminary check on the MyKad using a device called an M-Cad PDRM/JPN, it was found that the MyKad was not registered with the system. Further checking was made with the NRD and confirmed that the MyKad was fake and not registered in the department’s system.

Meanwhile, from further investigation it was established that the accused had allegedly obtained the MyKad from a man in Semporna and that he had been using the Mykad since 2013 until the time he was caught.
