Rejang Taekwondo Club bucks up with 7-5-6 medal haul

SIBU: Rejang Taekwondo Club (RTC) have returned from the 4th Sarawak Junior and Senior Championship with an bigger medal haul of seven gold, five silver and six bronze held in Bintulu from June 12-14.

Team manager Albert Wong said the result was an improvement when compared with last year’s showing.

“Last year, we returned with only six gold, three silver and four bronze medals,” he said.

Sukma (2014) star Tie Ton Siong, as expected, won a gold medal in his pet welterweight category.

Other gold medalists were Tie Sing Da, Annie Lau Yih Jiun, Jacky Ting Poh Chuang, Alysa Law, Lucas Wong and Joyce Hii Ian Chyn.

The five silver medallists were Tiffany Yew, Erica Yew, Sydney Yew, Nyur Syakirim and Wong Lie Ho while the six bronze medallists were Bennie Tie, Simon Tang, Law Yih Heng, Mohd Affendy, Oscar Hii and Leslie Chin.

The annual event organised by Bintulu Smart Taekwondo Club attracted about 450 exponents from the 19 taekwondo clubs affiliated to STA.

They included members from Kuching, Sri Aman, Saratok, Sarikei, Bintulu, Bintangor, Sibu, Miri, Serian and Mukah.

Wong said the competition was a platform to scout for potential players for the 2016 Sukma to be held in Sarawak.

Meanwhile, Wong said RTC would be sending a strong team for the 3rd Chief Minister Borneo Cup Taekwondo Championship to be held in Kuching from Aug 21-23.

“Shortlisted players are already undergoing intensive training at our main gym in Wong King Huo Road,” he said.
