KUCHING: The first ammonia-based chemical manufacturing plant in Sarawak, owned by Huchems Fine Chemical Corporation of Korea, is expected to offer value added chemical products that will be beneficial to the domestic economy.

Earthwork for the plant has begun two weeks ago in Bintulu and the earth breaking ceremony is expected to be officially launched by Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem on July 29.

“Some 3,000 local community and Koreans are expected to attend the ceremony that will be held at the site in Kidurong,” said Huchem Fine Chemical (Malaysia) chief executive officer, KT Kim.

The development progress of the plant is currently on track with completion expected to be two years from now.

The plant is expected to utilise natural gas resources in Sarawak, generate jobs for Sarawakians and increase availability of key ammonia-based products, such as fertilizer.

Kim added the chemical plant marks a significant development in the Sarawak state energy and petrochemical sectors by tapping local energy supplies, thereby generating indigenously produced, value added chemical products that will prove critical to other sectors of the domestic economy, including fertilizer for agriculture.

With Huchems’ long term experience in the petrochemicals industry and natural resources, this project can be successfully realised and be a win-win for both Sarawak (Malaysia) and Huchems (South Korea), said Kim after contract signing ceremony with ACFM Engineering and Construction Sdn Bhd (Malaysia) here for the earthwork and construction of the plant in Kidurong.

Established in 2002, Huchems, short for Human Chemical Science, currently has 14 manufacturing plants in Korea and the main operation are to provides industrial chemicals including nitric acid, DNT and MNB, as well as basic chemical products such as ammonia.

Huchems has also expanded its business into the environmental industry, and is now occupying a leading position in the greenhouse gas emissions reduction market in Korea.
