Motion on quake submitted for debate

PENAMPANG: Kapayan assemblyman Dr Edwin Bosi has submitted a motion on the 5.9 magnitude earthquake that struck Sabah on June 5.

Dr Bosi told a press conference at the party’s headquarters yesterday that he hoped Speaker Datuk Seri Panglima Salleh Said would allow the motion to be debated during the assembly sitting on July 6 to 8 as it is of public interest.

It is also good for the government to rebut the notions that the government did not do much to help victims of the quake and the subsequent mudslides, he said.

“I submitted the motion on July 3 and am hoping that it will be allowed by the Speaker as this is a matter of urgency. Lives were lost in the disaster and we have been informed by experts that future tremors and mudslides will occur.

“Lives and properties have been lost and not forgetting the trauma that the people, especially the villagers living at the foot and around Mount Kinabalu is experiencing. “The tourism industry is also badly affected and the building industry is also affected.

“We are now reminded that this will not be the first and last earthquake. Scientists have informed us that Sabah is not an earthquake-proof country. Thus, we must be prepared,” he added.

Dr Bosi said he would like to know what and how the government is doing in facing this post-earthquake re-construction effort.

He hopes that the result of the debate can lead to a standard operating procedure in facing a calamity in an earthquake.
