TAWAU: Ninety-five per cent of road accident cases are caused by the negligence of motorists, followed by the condition of vehicles which accounted for four per cent and another one per cent due to road condition, according to the Sabah Road Safety Department.

Its director, Herdiansah Bin Abdul Karim, said most of the accident cases were caused by speeding followed by overtaking dangerously as well as the new trend of using handphones while driving.

Therefore, there is an urgent need for parents to educate their children on driving safely, fastening their seatbelt and wearing their helmet properly.

He said this to the media yesterday after officiating the road safety campaign in front of Puspakom here.

“We can accept that accidents will occur but we cannot accept any fatal accidents involving loss of life. Besides weekly consultation, the Sabah Road Safety Department has carried out 155 programs throughout the state in the first six months of this year in order to educate and create awareness on the importance of road safety among motorists.

“We cannot guarantee a zero accident rate, especially during festivals. However we can reduce the number of accidents. Hence, I strongly urge motorists to plan their journey earlier and have their vehicles inspected before starting their journey,” said Herdiansah.

According to him, Puspakom will also carry out free vehicle inspections for 10-point checking from July 6-15.
