SIBU: Traders holding cheap sale must ensure that they have at least 70 per cent of items on offer.

Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism (MDTCC) Sibu branch chief Kasim Mana said the new requirement also compelled traders to list the old and new prices.

“Action can be taken under Trade Descriptions (Cheap Sales Price) (Amendment) Act 2011 to deal with unscrupulous traders trying to fleece consumers.

“Upon conviction, offenders can be fined up to RM100,000 or sentenced to three years’ jail or to both,” Kasim cautioned.

Speaking to The Borneo Post yesterday, he disclosed that 52 cheap sale permits had been issued thus far for Hari Raya Aidilfitri.

“Eight permits were issued to supermarkets,” he said, adding others included electrical shops, furniture shops, footwear and fashion outlets and boutiques.

“All applications for cheap sale should reach our office 14 days before carrying out the offer,” he added.
