PORT KLANG: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA), Klang district, has foiled an attempt to smuggle mangrove wood valued at RM43,320.

Klang MMEA Enforcement chief First Admiral Mohd Aliyas Hamdan said the integrated operation which was conducted over nine days from June 27 focused on Pulau Che Mat Zain, Pulau Pintu Gedung, Pulau Selat Kering, Pulau Tengah and Pulau Klang here.

“The integrated operation with Selangor State Forestry Department succeeded in averting an attempt to smuggle 6,000 pieces of mangrove wood believed to have been illegally felled for piling.

“However there was no arrest made in the operation as the illegal woodcutters escaped into the mangrove swamp,” he said in a media conference here yesterday.

Also present was Selangor Forestry Department director Dr Mohd Puat Dahalan.

“MMEA and the Forestry Department will continue to hold such operation to eradicate the illegal felling of mangrove wood,” he said. — Bernama
