SIBU: Taking up seafaring as a last choice by youths should be a thing of the past.

The head of Marine Department Sibu Region, Marzuki Ibrahim, stressed that such perception was incorrect because in today’s advanced world a seafarer’s job is globally recognised as professional.

“In today’s modern era, to become a seafarer, a person needs high qualifications and will have to undergo professional training.

“Besides that, vessels today are fully equipped with advanced high-technology equipment,” he said when speaking at the breaking of fast and a ceremony to celebrate World Seafarers Day organised by Pelita Maslaut Sdn Bhd (PMSB) at Mahsuri Road here recently.

PMSB managing director Masni Amit officiated at the event, which was attended by some 70 students and teaching staff from PMSB.

He called on all youths from various races to take up seafaring as it offers a very attractive income.
