11 pirate taxi operators detained in Keningau

KENINGAU: The traffic police have detained 11 people including two foreigners who have valid travel documents on suspicion of using their vehicles as pirate taxis.

District police chief DSP Douglas Nyeging Taong said the police made the successful arrest with the cooperation of the public who provided tips to police and patrol police.

“It also aims to bring awareness to them to understand the law that it is an offence not to have a valid licence or permit to carry passengers,” he said at a press conference here on Monday.

“Pirate Taxi Ops is carried with traffic officers and personnel from Sabah Contingent Police Headquarters, led by ASP Parum AK Niot and three traffic officers along with 16 traffic officers and personnel from Keningau Police Headquarters.

“All the eleven vehicles were detained under Section 60 of the Road Transport Act 1987 because they have no driving licences, modified exzos and no road tax and were summonsed RM300.

Summonses were issued for various offences committed, he said.

He said Investigation under Section 51 Commercial Vehicle Licensing Board Act (CVLB) 1987 on suspicion of using private vehicles as pirate taxis, which carries a fine of not less than RM1,000 and not more than RM10,000 or imprisonment not exceeding one year or both.
