JOHOR BAHARU: Eight-time Bundesliga champions Borussia Dortmund whipped Super League champion Johor Darul Ta’zim 5-1 in a friendly match at the Larkin Stadium, here yesterday night, July 9.

The formidable Dortmund side led by former Manchester United midfielder Shinji Kagawa from Japan scored through Iikay Gundogan (22nd min), Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang (29th min), Kevin Kampl (32nd min), Shinji Kagawa (74th min), Calvin Jeremy (81st min) and Marco Reus (90th min) while Gary Steven Robbat scored JDT’s only goal in the 39th min.

The German side as expected were in a mean mood, having started their Asian Tour with a 6-0 thrashing of J-League side Kawasaki Frontale at the Todoroki Stadium on Tuesday.

The only consolation for JDT is that unlike the Japanese club, the home side were able to breach the solid Borussia defence at least once.

JDT, under coach Mario Gomez, are preparing for the AFC Cup quarter-finals against South China of Hong Kong next month.

JDT and Dortmund sealed a development partnership in 2014. The partnership involves both sides sharing coaching and training information and exchanging of players in a bid to develop youth football in Johor. — BERNAMA
