ALOR SETAR: Trees uprooted during a storm here yesterday damaged seven vehicles at the Sultan Abdul Halim Expressway and Jalan Sultan Badlishah.

All the drivers and passengers in the vehicles were unhurt in the incident which happened at 11.40am.

Businessman Hasnul Armi Hasbullah, 42, one of those whose vehicles were damaged, said he was driving home to Tanjung Bendahara from Sungai Petani when a large tree fell on his two-year-old Nissan Almera car at the Sultan Abdul Halim Expressway.

“I heard a deafening sound of something falling on my car. I realised a tree had fallen across the back seats. I narrowly escaped being pinned down,” he said.

However, he could not get out of the car despite trying to kick the door open and was saved by members of the public and drivers of other damaged vehicles.

Five-month pregnant Jamiatul Nazirah Mohd Jazlan, 22, of Tokai, Pendang, was thankful that her husband, Amirul Ashraf Anuar, 22, and she were safe after their vehicle was also damaged.

She said they were heading for a supermarket in Alor Mengkudu to shop for Raya clothes and other items.

“It was raining heavily and I saw a branch fall on the vehicles in front of ours while we stopped at the lights,” said Nazirah, who was traumatised by the incident.

Another victim, Abdul Wahab Abu Seman, 59, of Jalan Tokai, Simpang Empat, said: “The Alor Setar City Council should chop down trees by the roadside which are in danger of being uprooted during storms.” — Bernama
