SANDAKAN: Community Development and Consumer Affairs Minister Datuk Hajjah Jainab Haji Mohd Ayid has called on every business operator to comply with the list price for controlled goods set by the Ministry of Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism.

Speaking to reporters after visiting and inspecting the prices of controlled goods at the Sandakan Central Market yesterday, Jainab expressed her dissatisfaction at the behavior of some sellers. “I have been to Sandakan Central Market a few times and was not satisfied with some sellers, especially those who sell chicken, sea products and beef.

“Some sellers failed to display tags of the updated prices for these controlled goods.

I believe that most of these sellers have been selling goods for years, therefore they should be aware of the prices of controlled goods, especially during festive season.

“Some of them also did not appropriately tag the price accordingly to the item which caused confusion among consumers,” she said, adding that sellers must be aware of the ‘halal’ status on their goods.

Meanwhile, Jainab advised enforcement authorities including Domestic Trade, Cooperatives and Consumerism Ministry, Sandakan Municipal Council, Islamic Affairs Department and Health Department to regularly monitor important issues raised by consumers during this festive season. In another development, Jainab urged the relevant enforcement authorities to inspect several stalls which were rented to illegal immigrants by local owners.

She said the situation could affect local sellers as it violated the rule set by the Sandakan Central Market management authority. “Relevant local authorities should take stern action on local owners who have violated this rule,” she said. During the inspection, six sellers were compounded for failing to display appropriate price tags.
