KOTA KINABALU: Petronas contributed RM52,000 worth of essential goods and financial aid to villagers in areas around Kampung Lembah Permai and Kampung Kiau, who were affected by the recent Ranau earthquake and mud floods, as part of its Sentuhan Kasih corporate social responsibility (CSR) programme.

The contributions were given to 200 villagers around Kampung Lembah Permai and 60 villagers around Kampung Kiau, who received RM100 cash and RM100 in essential goods such as rice.

Petronas Sabah and Labuan general manager Julita Ontol said the company began its Sentuhan Kasih programme since 2005 throughout the country.

“The programme gave us an opportunity to reach out to the communities and extend our assistance in conjunction with the main festive celebrations such as Aidilfitri, Chinese New Year, Kaamatan and Christmas.

“At the same time, the CSR programme instills and enhances voluntary spirit among Petronas employees,” she said in her speech during a ceremony when handing out the contributions to the villagers here yesterday.

Petronas had earlier on Wednesday contributed RM3 million to the State Disaster Relief Fund for victims of the earthquake that hit Ranau on June 5.

This year, Julita said Petronas would improve its approach in implementing the Sentuhan Kasih programme by making it a channel to hand out contributions to disaster victims.

On the other hand, she said Petronas also supported and contributed to various human capital development programmes.

She said Petronas had established learning institutions and training centres such as Universiti Teknologi Petronas (UTP), Institut Teknologi Petroleum Petronas (INSTEP) and Kimanis Petroleum Training Centre (KTC).

Petronas also offered sponsorships for participants to further their studies to degree levels, Julita added.

“We hope that these initiatives would encourage the younger generation to grab the opportunities to equip themselves with various skills and expand their knowledge so that they can contribute to the development of Sabah and Malaysia.”

Also present were Petronas Sabah and Labuan chairman Mohamed Firouz Asnan and Ranau assistant district officer Mohd Yussin Ibrahim.
