KUALA LUMPUR: The Road Transport Department (RTD) has booked 170 for various offences after inspecting 1,030 vehicles on the first day of Ops Hari Raya Aidilfitri which began on Saturday night.

RTD director-general Datuk Seri Ismail Ahmad said in the integrated operation which started at 12 midnight, seven drivers had to undergo urine tests conducted by the National Anti-Drug Agency (AADK) for driving under the influence of drugs.

He said 54 summonses were issued by police while the Land Public Transport Commission (SPAD) booked two people during the operation.

“The integrated operation involving various enforcement agencies was conducted to ensure safety on the roads during the festive season,” he told reporters after carrying out an operation at the Batu toll plaza on the Duke Highway, here on Saturday night. He said the operation conducted simultaneously nationwide involved 1,800 state RTD personnel.

Meanwhile, in Kuala Terengganu, the state RTD is stepping up operations on motorcycles as an effort to reduce accidents involving motorcyclists and pillion riders.

Its director Abdul Rahman Emang Anyie said the operation was aimed at reducing motorcyclists who are the largest contributors of road accidents in the state.

In Bukit Mertajam, State RTD director Datuk Hassan Yaacob said a total of 123 summon notices were issued by the Road Transport Department to errant motorcyclists in the special operation Saturday night.

“Action was taken on 87 motorcycles, including one which was sealed,” he told reporters during the operation at the Juru Toll Plaza (north bound) Saturday night.

He said the summon notices were issued for offences, including riding without valid licence and registration number plate which did not meet the stipulated specification.

In another development, Hassan said RTD, with the cooperation of the Skuad Muda 1JPJ and the Road Safety Department would carry out various programmes to reduce road accidents during the Aidilfitri celebration.

The programmes included stationing RTD members at every 30km distance along state roads and rest and recreation areas and to carry out inspection on buses before they could be allowed to leave the depot or terminal, he added. — Bernama
