GADONG, BRUNEI-MUARA: Members of the public are advised to stay calm following a fire at one of the electricity generators at Batu Bersurat which happened at mid-afternoon yesterday, Brudirect reported.

Yang Berhormat Pehin Datu Singamanteri Colonel (Rtd) Dato Seri Setia Dr. Awang Haji Mohammad Yasmin bin Haji Umar, the Minister of Energy at the Prime Minister’s Office, was at the scene to oversee the operation.

Speaking to the media, the Minister said that Brunei Darussalam has sufficient electricity supply. Based on the preliminary report by the Fire and Rescue Services Department (FRD), it received an emergency call at about 3.08pm regarding a fire at the Batu Bersurat Power Generator II. Following the alert, six fire engines from the Beribi, Berakas, Bandar Seri Begawan and Rimba Fire Stations rushed to the site. The blaze was brought under control within 25 minutes. As a precautionary measure, power supply to several areas in the Brunei-Muara District including the Gadong commercial centre was cut off temporarily. The cause of the fire is under investigation.

According to the Energy Department at the Prime Minister’s Office, the power supply has been restored to the affected areas at 5:30pm.
