KOTA KINABALU: Minister of Special Tasks Datuk Teo Chee Kang commended mountain guides who joined the first Mountain Search and Rescue Unit (MOSAR) as auxiliary firemen under the Fire and Rescue Department (Bomba).

Teo said mountain guides not only had the hiking experience and physique to do the job competently, they would also enhance Bomba’s strength and efficiency in search and rescue (SAR) efforts.

Teo, who is also Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) president, said this during the presentation of Raya goodies at the Bomba headquarters here yesterday, along with LDP supreme council, Youth, and Women members.

The party members also went to the Sabah police headquarters (IPK) in Kepayan and Lok Kawi Army Camp to distribute the Raya goodies later on the same day.

Teo said the purpose of giving out the contribution was to show LDP’s appreciation to the security personnel for their commitment and dedication in executing their duties during the festive seasons, especially in the fasting month and Hari Raya celebration.

On the other hand, Teo lauded Bomba, the police force and army for their outstanding effort to assist the victims affected by the Ranau earthquake on June 5.

“They have worked tirelessly to help the victims through difficult times.”

He added that rescue teams were constantly stationed at disaster zones to protect the lives and properties of the people.

Meanwhile, Sabah Bomba director Nordin Pauzi said selected mountain guides were expected to commence training for MOSAR in August this year and would begin their service in the following month.

He said the department would select about 100 mountain guides to join MOSAR.

Also present were LDP vice president Chin Shu Ying, chief publicity officer Albert Kok, organizing secretary Peter Chong Su Leong, supreme council member Albert Ngan, Central Women Movement leader Datin Shim Nyat Yun, deputy Central Women leader Glenna Wong and deputy Central Youth leader Chiang Bhat Sing.
