KUCHING: Taxi drivers operating at Kuching Sentral feel they are being robbed of their income due to the presence of illegal van and car operators who solicit and take away their customers.

Deputy chairman of Koperasi Teksi Kuching Bhd, Yazid Ahmad, said he had no choice but to make a police report at Kota Sentosa police station yesterday about these illegal operators.

“I have to make the police report because I have received complaints from members about this illegal operations taking place.

“They have been doing this illegal operation for quite sometimes now and is badly affecting their income,” he said, adding that he had to let the people know so that the relevant authorities could take action against them.

“I have even furnished the police with information on these illegal operators so that they can follow up on the matter and help us to have a smoother operation in order to make a decent living,” he added.

He added that during each festive season, they would usually make extra money but due to these rogue operators, their income was not much different than on normal days.

“I hope the relevant authorities would be able to see our problems and sympathise with us as our livelihood depends on this industry,” he said.

He said he had to take this action as Koperasi Teksi Kuching Bhd operating at Kuching Sentral had to compete with cabbies from other taxi associations.

Assistant director of the State Road Transport Department, Albert Clement, meanwhile said the taxi operators could always seek their assistance, or from the police in apprehending those illegal van operators.

When contacted yesterday, however, he said they had not received any complaints from the association on the matter.
