KOTA KINABALU: Liberal Democratic Party (LDP) has condemned the individuals who took the law into their own hands, and those who assaulted patrons of Low Yat Plaza and two journalists.

LDP president Datuk Teo Chee Kang said the brawl occurred at Low Yat Plaza showed that what was otherwise a mere crime of theft might be easily manipulated into a racial issue.

“It also reflects that racial tensions can be easily stoked up by some people in furtherance of their selfish agenda.

“Reckless netizens and gullible users of social media make things worse,” Teo said in a press statement released yesterday.

Teo, who is also the Minister of Special Tasks, said the party sees such ugly incident with utmost concerns.

“LDP condemns those who took the law into their own hands, and those who assaulted patrons of the shopping mall and two journalists.”

Teo pointed out that those who got involved in physical fights clearly broke the law, but those who incited racial hatreds are bigger threats to our multiracial society.

“Now that all involved have been arrested, they must be charged and punished so that it can serve as a deterrent to others.

“It is paramount for the police to act and be seen as acting fairly to restore public confidence in the law and order of our country,” he stressed.
