Four men detained for stealing cables

LABUAN: Police have detained four local men for stealing cables worth RM20,000 at Yard 36, Jalan Patau-Patau, Kampung Rancha Rancha, here.

Labuan Police chief, Supt Adzhar Othman, yesterday said the cables which belonged to Talisman Malaysia Limited, one of the tenants of Petisyen Bestac Joint Venture (PBJV) Sdn Bhd where the cables were kept.

A Talisman supervisor lodged a police report about the theft on July 12 at 9.34am and police detained the four suspects at 3.30om on the same day following an investigation.

The suspects, who were employees of PBJV, stole 68 units of 1.3-2 metres long cables for their copper.

“The cables were found in the bush around Kampung Sungai Bedaun. One of the suspects told police that they were planning to sell them to a shop here where the current price of copper is RM16 per kilo.

“All the cables and copper were then brought to the police station. The cables were supposed to be used at an oil rig here,” he said.

All the suspects admitted to committing the crime, he said and added that they would be remanded until July 19 to facilitate investigation under Section 379 Penal Code.
