MIRI: Since 2010, Miss Global International Malaysia (MGIM), the only national beauty pageant in East Malaysia, has sent out more than 20 winners to multiple international beauty contests like Miss International, World Miss University, Miss Oriental Tourism, Miss Intercontinental and Miss Supranational.

Managing director of MerveilleuxM Production, Marlene Lim, said that beauty pageants weren’t just about strutting out in bikini and gowns; brains and confidence are equally important when representing the country on the international stage.

“Though MGIM is a home-grown pageant brand that started from Miri, we are confident enough to say that we are the first organization to crown and send representatives for Malaysia in Miss Supranational and Miss Global International, with representatives winning subsidiary titles and runnerup spots in the two pageants.

“What makes us different from other national pageants is that we focus not only on refining the outer appearance (make-up and cat walking), we stress on toughing up the girls’ physical and mental prowess through boot camp and team-building activities. Hence, at the end of the day, we can see that all the girls have grown close to each other and spirit of togetherness is there,” she reiterated at a press conference yesterday.

This year, she disclosed, the pageant will be selecting winners to represent the country in Miss International, Miss Supranational, Miss Intercontinental and Miss Bikini Universe.

“We are proud to say that Miss International pageant is one of the biggest beauty pageants in the world, alongside Miss Universe, Miss World and Miss Earth. Meanwhile, Miss Intercontinental will be marking its 44th anniversary, which began in 1971 whilst, Miss Supranational that was born in 2009 is fast becoming a major international pageant.

“This shows that we are slowly evolving and the girls are getting better to match up with international standards, which is a great encouragement.

“Hence, to up the standard of our contestants, MGIM will also be making a record of sorts, to be the first to invite a world level pageant trainer from Philippines to train the newly crowned MGIM queens,” she said.

Marlene insisted that MGIM is a non-profit beauty pageant that continues to contribute to under-privileged people.

This year, she added, funds raised from the programmes will benefit Miri Community-based Rehabilitation Centre (PDK) Piasau, Miri Home for the Aged and Miri Hospital. Sixteen contestants from all over the country will be competing for the crown on Aug 1 at Eastwood Valley Golf & Country Club, grand ballroom.
