KUCHING: A Youth Supreme Council member of Parti Rakyat Sarawak (PRS), Martin John Madden, wants Sarawak Energy Berhad (SEB) to explain why electricity charges are inconsistent and inaccurate at times which may burden the ordinary consumers.

Citing an example, he said some electricity bills were estimated at low amounts for a few months, but when the bill came based on actual meter reading the charges have accumulated to a substantially high amount.

“The practice of estimating bills is unfair to the people. As we all know, the cost of living is high nowadays and people who are not earning high salaries will have trouble paying when an unexpected bill of large amount arrives.

“If they are unable to pay on time, they are penalised and may even face disconnection,” Martin told The Borneo Post yesterday.

He said Sarawak Energy which had been given the mandate to manage Sarawak’s energy resources should not forget the hardship of the ordinary people.

“SEB, which earns billions from our state’s natural resources, should be more sensitive to the needs of the people. I hope they can come up with a solution that is fair to the people of Sarawak,” he said.
