Chong: No need to question ‘walk’ organisers

KUCHING: State DAP chairman Chong Chieng Jen sees no reason for the police to question the organisers of the ‘722 Sarawak Freedom’ and ‘Independence Day Walk’ held on Wednesday.

He said the organisers did not commit any crime, thus the need for the police to question them should not arise.

“What is there to investigate and complain about? The police can only investigate when a crime has been committed. What is there to investigate about the walk since they did not commit any crime,” he told a press conference at DAP headquarters here yesterday, which was also attended by Pending and Batu Kawah assemblywomen Violet Yong and Christina Chiew respectively.

Chong, who is Bandar Kuching MP and Kota Sentosa assemblyman, was asked to comment on Police Commissioner Datuk Seri Muhammad Sabtu Osman’s statement which stated that the involvement of S4S at the event in Song Kheng Hai rugby field had raised concerns since it was not a registered entity.

He was also quoted as saying that police would question the organisers which included Sarawak Dayak Iban Association (Sadia). Chong said S4S was just a concept which disagreed and agreed with certain issues, adding that even Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Adenan Satem accepted the concept advocated by S4S.

“There is nothing for the police to investigate. Just do your job to combat crimes and not to poke your nose into other areas.”
