KUCHING: Eight teams are vying for top honours in the Sarawak Inter-Division Youth U20 Basketball Championship at Sentosa Indoor Basketball Stadium from yesterday until Sunday.

The event organised by the Sarawak Basketball Association and hosted by the Samarahan Division Basketball Association is participated by five boys teams and three girls teams.

Teams vying for the boys’ title are Kuching, Samarahan, Sibu, Bintulu and Miri while the girls teams are Kuching, Sibu and Miri.

Kuching Division Basketball Association (KDBA) vice chairman Ho Chin Hin advised the divisional cagers to give their best in the championship as it was not easy to be selected to represent Kuching, who are the traditional powerhouse in state basketball.

Kuching are fielding 12 boys and 12 girls in the four-day competition which was to be opened by Assistant Sports Minister Datuk Lee Kim Shin later yesterday.

Kuching are kicking off their campaign in the girls’ fray against Sibu and against Bintulu in the boys’ competition yesterday.

Ho thanked the coaches for their strong commitment, dedication and contribution to help Kuching earn glory in various competitions.

On behalf of Sarawak Energy Bhd, Ho handed over the sponsorship of jerseys for the Kuching girls team to its manager Wong Kin Huat while the other KDBA vice chairman Wilson Tan presented the association’s flag to Kuching boys team manager Alan Tay in a simple ceremony at Sungai Apong BA’s basketball stadium on Tuesday evening.
