steal-van-knock-JPJ-(3)KOTA KINABALU: A security guard who was caught for drug possession by his employer got more than he could bargain for when he did not only steal his colleague’s vehicle to flee the scene, but also rammed the vehicle into a Road Transport Department’s (RTD) patrol vehicle along Jalan Tuaran Bypass here on Wednesday.

It was learnt that prior to the 9.30am incident, the employer had confronted the suspect as he suspected him of taking drug.

As the employer went through the suspect’s belongings, he found a suspicious item that is believed used to smoke syabu.

Fearing that the employer would call the police, the suspect ran out from the office, stole his colleague’s Nissan Vannette van and fled to his workplace at a college in Likas.

City police chief ACP M. Chandra yesterday said following a police report lodged by the employer, a patrol vehicle spotted the stolen van along Jalan Tuaran Bypass.

“Upon seeing the police vehicle, the suspect immediately sped off and during the cat and mouse chase, the suspect lost control of the van and knocked a vehicle that belongs to the Road Transport Department at a roadblock at Jalan Tuaran Bypass.

“The suspect was apprehended on the spot,” he said.

Chandra added police investigation showed the suspect was a drug addict after his preliminary urine was tested positive.

The 29-year-old suspect is remanded for investigation under Section 42 (1) of the Road Transport Act 1987 and Section 15(1)(a) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952.
