SUNGAI BULOH: There are still some stubborn heavy vehicle drivers who have claimed ignorance of the traffic rules and constantly driving in the right lanes of highways, according to Selangor Road Transport Department (RTD).

Its director Datuk Valluvan Veloo said according to Rule 4A of the Road Traffic Rules 1959, all heavy goods vehicles and public service vehicles, including express bus were not allowed to use the right lane except for the purpose of overtaking.

“Those (heavy vehicle drivers) who violate these rules can be compounded RM300,” he told Bernama during the operation codenamed ‘Ops Bas Ekspres’ at the Sungai Buloh rest and recreation (Kuala Lumpur-bound) area, near here yesterday.

Valluvan said during the operation, 10 express bus drivers were detected speeding in the right lane of highways.

Some 84 buses were inspected and action were taken against 25 buses for committing 35 offences, he added.

He said among offences often committed by express bus drivers were smoking while driving, using mobile phones while driving, rear brake not working, failure to comply with traffic signs, absence of a fire extinguisher, not possessing a Public Service Vehicle (PSV) licence and parking the vehicles at unauthorised places.

Valluvan said 12 express buses were also detected without a second driver and 28 summonses were issued against the bus drivers for various offences.

“According to the RTD rules, all express buses must have two drivers for a journey covering over four hours or 300km,” he said.

The operation was conducted in collaboration with the 1JPJ Young Squad and the National Anti-Drugs Agency, involving 49 personnel. — Bernama
