More LED lights in MPP areas if energy savings substantial

KUCHING: Padawan Municipal Council (MPP) will consider putting up more LED lights in areas under its jurisdiction if there is a substantial energy savings for the council, and the lighting system is efficient.

Chairman Lo Khere Chiang said at the moment only a few Light Emitting Diode (LED) street lights were installed in MJC township area, but they faced problem with maintenance.

“The private sector is very good at installing but poor in maintenance despite our agreement with them.

“Sesco won’t maintain if we install LED or any other lights,” he explained yesterday.

He was asked if MPP would consider putting more LED streetlights in Kota Sentosa and other areas under its jurisdiction, in the likes of the nearly 300 LED streetlights in Satok area put up by Kuching City North Commission (DBKU).

According to Lo, it was viable for DBKU and Kuching City South Council (MBKS) to install LEDs as areas under the two councils made up only a third of MPP’s area.

Furthermore their street lights are concentrated within a small area which was convenient for the contractor to maintain, whereas MPP is too vast for it to be feasible.

“However, the same contractor who maintained the LED lights for DBKU and maybe MBKS will find it economical to maintain LED lights for MPP. We may put up more LED lights if maintenance of faulty lights can be done,” he explained.

He encouraged Sarawak Energy to consider changing all lights to LED to save electricity, and to replace them when they are faulty.

If the whole of Sarawak was to use LED lights, Sarawak Energy would find it worthwhile maintaining them.
