KUCHING: More than 350 Zumba enthusiasts danced like there’s no tomorrow at the third annual Zumbathon themed ‘Animal’ in benefit of Save Our Strays (SOS) Kuching at Crown Square here yesterday.

Touted as the biggest Zumba Fitness charity event of the year, the 100-minute Zumbathon saw participants of all ages dance to catchy global rhythms such as Latin pop, salsa and merengue while led by a team of the city’s popular Zumba Fitness instructors.

Throughout the adrenaline pumping session, they made every move count not only for their own fitness and well-being but also in terms of financial contribution towards animal welfare.

This year’s event was a roaring success as an impressive RM12,500 from sold out ticket sales and donations were raised, thanks to the positive and generous contributions from the public. Their kind-hearted gesture will no doubt be most helpful as all proceeds will be donated to SOS Kuching to fund its programmes. Since 2013, the Zumbathon charity event has been held with the aim to promote awareness of SOS Kuching’s efforts and to raise much needed funds for animal rescue and SOS Kuching’s programmes such as the Trap Neuter Vaccination Re-home (TNVR) programme.

Meanwhile, SOS Kuching in a statement expressed its gratitude to the overwhelming support and donations by the public whose contributions made a real difference in reducing the number of strays on the streets and realising Kuching as a caring society that supported animal welfare.

The generous contributions and support from the public from the previous Zumbathon had given SOS Kuching the means to rescue 282 canines and 19 felines last year.

This year, a whopping 275 canines and 71 felines were rescued as of May, with the number still increasing.
