MIRI: A couple travelling from Bintulu to Miri on Sunday afternoon along the Miri-Bintulu road was surprised to find a newborn baby boy inside a box by the roadside with its umbilical cord still attached.

The shock discovery was made around 3pm near Bukit Song, Lambir, about 30 km from here. Miri acting police chief Supt Stanley Jonathan Ringgit when contacted confirmed the discovery. It is believed that the baby was 24 to 36 hours old when it was found.

According to sources, the couple and their son made a pit stop at the area as the husband wanted to ease himself. Once they pulled over by the roadside, the husband and his son looked for a spot to ease themselves, and it was during that time that they heard a cry.

They then realised that the sound came from a box not far from where they were standing. Curious to find out more, they peeped at the box and saw a newborn baby boy inside. They immediately took the baby inside their car and sped off to Miri before lodging a police report on Monday.

“The couple lodged a police report on Monday afternoon at Miri central police station (CPS). The baby has been taken to Miri hospital for a medical check-up,” said Stanley. The case is being investigated under Section 317 of the Penal Code.
