SIBU: Clement Tiong Wei Bin won all three throwing events to emerge as the best sportsboy at the SMK Tiong Hin annual athletics championship which ended at Tun Zaidi Stadium yesterday.

Besides winning the discus and javelin, he set a new record in the Boys C shot putt with a new distance of 10.89m. The old mark was 9.88m.

In the best sportsgirl category, Debby Lau Kah Kah and Sydney Yew Yieng Pin shared the title after both chalked up five gold medals a piece.

Debby won the long jump, 200m, 400m, 4x100m and 4x400m relay while Sydney collected the gold medal in the long jump, 800m, 1500m, 4x100m and 4x400m relay.

Green team emerged champion after amassing 268 points, followed by Red with 211.5, Blue with 210 and Yellow with 99.5.

Earlier, in his closing remarks, the school’s board of directors chairman Philip Lau King Kah said sports can help in physical and mental development while students can learn about teamwork, sportsmanship, winning and losing, and the rewards of hard work.

He urged parents and teachers to encourage students to be more active in sports activities.

“This is an avenue where they can interact with people of their own age, carry out healthy activities and build up their social skills as well.”

With the recent completion of the new indoor basketball court, he added, students were now able to conduct their sport activities sheltered from sun and rain.
