SIBU: Civil servant Mazlan Hazemi was working when fire broke out in his house at Lane 9 in Kampung Bahagia at 3pm yesterday.

Mazlan had left his two children(five-year-old daughter and eight-year-old son), mother and elderly aunt at home. Mazlan’s wife was working in Kanowit.

The neighbours carried Mazlan’s partially crippled mother, in her 60s, to safety but her wheelchair went up in smoke as the fire spread so quickly that the family had no time to salvage anything.

The house next to Mazlan’s where his mother-in-law stayed was also razed.

No casualty was reported.

Mazlan said he received a call from his neighbour when the fire broke out He had built the partially wooden house costing RM100,000 a decade ago.

“We lost more than RM130,000 in the fire,” he said.

Mazlan believed he could have suffered heavier losses as the initial estimate of loss did not take into account his partially burnt car and the razing of the house where his mother-in-law lived.

Abang Hashim represented Nangka assemblyman Dr Annuar Rapaee in handing over a donation to Mazlan’s family.
